Perry Leaves Race and Final Count Gives Iowa to Santorum

Jan. 19, 2012

Texas Governor Rick Perry droped out of the race for the Republican nomination for president today and endorsed former Speaker of the House of Representatives Newt Gingrich. At a news conference in North Charleston, South Carolina, Perry stated that there is no “viable path forward” for him. He added, “Newt is not perfect, but who among us is?” His departure leaves four candidates in the race for the Republican nomination.

In Iowa, the state Republican Party chairman, Matt Strawn, announced that the Iowa caucuses have been certified as a split decision between former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum. While Romney had been declared the winner of the January 3 contest by 8 votes, the final count now has Santorum ahead by 34 votes.

Richard J. Santorum served in the United States Senate from 1995 to 2007. Santorum, a Republican, represented Pennsylvania. U.S. Senate
